Oakland, CA, July 17, 2017—Dr. Pastor Castell-Florit Serrate, who is also Co-Chair of MEDICC’s Joint Academic Council, has been designated President of Cuba’s National Council of Scientific Societies in Health. In addition to this new role, he will continue as Director of the National School of Public Health.
A member of Cuba’s Academy of Sciences, Dr. Castell-Florit’s contribution to Cuban public health over the last 45 years was recognized last year by PAHO, which honored him with its 2016 Health Administration in the Americas Award.
“We are certain that Dr. Castell-Florit’s dedication and leadership will successfully guide Cuba’s scientific societies in health,” commented MEDICC Executive Director Dr. C. William Keck.
Dr. Castell-Florit, a physician with a PhD in health administration and a Dr.Sc. in sciences, has also served beyond Cuba as a consultant in countries such as Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica.
During the designation ceremony, tribute was paid to one of MEDICC’s Academic Council founders and former President of the Council of Scientific Societies in Health, Dr.Sc. Ernesto de la Torre Montejo, who passed away last year.
The Cuban National Council of Scientific Societies in Health is responsible for coordinating activities of the associations representing the various Cuban medical and public health specialties.
