17 Feb Tribute to MEDICC Founder Juan J. Ceballos Arrieta (1932-2017)
February 17, 2017—MEDICC pays tribute to Dr. Juan J. Ceballos founding member of the organization’s Academic Council, which he joined in 1997. Dr. Ceballos passed away this week in Havana at the age of 85.
His long career in medicine, medical education and public health began in 1960 when he received his MD from the University of Havana Medical School and went on to specialize in clinical laboratory medicine. Dr. Ceballos later obtained a PhD in Public Health Administration. However, he was perhaps best known for his contribution as a medical educator, first serving as Rector of the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in Santiago de Cuba and then helping to establish medical schools in Africa and Latin America.
For many years he was responsible for the program that brought several thousand young South Africans to study medicine in Cuba. At the time of his death, Dr. Ceballos was an adviser to the Ministry of Public Health in the area of medical education.
“Dr. Ceballos contributed to MEDICC his vast knowledge of medical pedagogy, health systems’ administration and student relations,” said Dr. Peter Bourne, chair of the MEDICC Board and co-chair of the Academic Council. “We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We will surely miss him.”
