WHO Director Margaret Chan in Cuba

WHO Director Margaret Chan and PAHO Director Carissa Etienne are wrapping up their visit to Cuba, where Dr. Chan officially inaugurated the new facilities housing Cuba’s national regulatory agency for medical products and its national clinical trials coordinating center.

Dr. Chan lauded Cuba’s universal health system and outcomes, as well as the dedication of its scientists, working “at the service of health” in Cuba and throughout the world.  She said Cuba has a “special place in my heart” due to the vision of its leaders and its health professionals, who have made public health a pillar of development.

At a reception in honor of both dignitaries, Dr. Chan called WHO, PAHO and Cuba important allies in the quest to make universally accessible not only human resources in health, but also generic medicines, noting that too many people worldwide are faced with high prices for pharmaceuticals needed to save lives.
